High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU)

I have recently introduced into my practice the new technology of High Intensity Focused ultrasound. I trained in Tokyo under Professor Uchida who is considered to be one of the world's leading HIFU exponents. I enclose a brochure for your information

Clinical trials with HIFU show good biochemical control at three years and ongoing longer-term data is being accumulated. The morbidity is low. The new Sonachill device has decreased the fistulation rate to 1%.

I feel that HIFU may be a useful treatment option for men with low volume prostate cancer who choose not to enter an active surveillance program, for men who ought to otherwise have radiotherapy and for men who are considered radiation failures. As a non-irradiating therapy it is attractive to this group as a salvage option.

The patients are typically admitted as day stay or overnight patients. Some men may require a mini TURP up to two weeks post operatively to clear devitalised prostatic tissue.

Please feel free to contact me should you have further enquiries about high intensity focused ultrasound.

Kind regards.

Yours sincerely,

DR P M KATELARIS
